Asher D, Daddy Freddy
On Asher D’s return from Jamaica in 1986 he was spotted rappin in Peckham and was put in touch with Music Of Life. Simon Harris wanted him to rap over a beat with another emcee, however, the other emcee let Asher D down, so he went to ask another man to do the tune, his name was Daddy Freddy, the tune was ‘Raggamuffin Hip Hop’, the rest is history.
In 1987 Asher D & Daddy Freddy dropped their debut 12″ on Music Of Life called ‘Raggamuffin Hip Hop’, a fusion of reggae and hip hop, which went on to become known as Ragga Hip Hop. Releasing an album of the same name ‘Raggamuffin Hip Hop’ they achieved modest success and inspired many artists, and Ragga Hip Hop became a huge hit around the world. They were blowing up big time until Asher D got involved with the wrong side of the law and was put inside for a while. On his release Daddy Freddy had gone solo, so Asher D did the same.
